The Story
HOW WE MET
Andrew Nagy and Lauren Bell met in 2009 at the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Andrew had been recently hired by the City of Rancho Cucamonga to be the head audio engineer at the playhouse while Lauren worked in the front of house. In the begining the two did not get along. In fact they declared themselves to be rivals. It wasn't until years later when they both had grown up that they decided to be friends and then more time after before they began dating.

HISTORY OF THE MITTEN BUILDING
Originally named the Haight Citrus Packing House, construction of the Mitten Building finished in 1890.
It handled the Poppy, Chief and Moon labels, sending the citrus out the door into refrigerated railroad cars to begin the trek to the East coast.
In later years it was used to package and distribute cider from apples grown in Oak Glen.
Around 1940 it became a factory owned by Frank Mitten whose company manufactured plastic letters for signs.
Mitten built a 5,000-square-foot addition for work and storage space, and an apartment on the south side of the building where he stayed when he was in town.
The roof of the single story apartment was constructed using distinctive bowed trusses known as Summerbell trusses, with overhead north-facing skylights, similar to those in the vacant MOD Packing House on North Third Street and the ones in the Honda-Yamaha Building at Redlands Boulevard and Seventh Street.
In 1980 Mitten sold the build where it remained empty for decades.
When the Redlands Conservancy formed in 1994, members placed the Mitten Building on a priority list for adaptive reuse, but had no luck in persuading anyone that the structure was worth saving. Meanwhile, vandals broke in repeatedly, some of them even practicing target shooting inside. On one occasion, a nearby business person saw smoke coming from inside the building and discovered a transient had built a campfire on the wood floor. The fire department arrived in time to save the building from damage. That was enough for six Redlands businessmen, most of whom were members of the Redlands Conservancy board of directors. They made an offer and, in August 1998, bought the building no one else wanted. For a decade, the Mitten Building has held events from fundraisers, weddings and reunions, to rallies, conferences and concerts. Many guests have commented on how nice it is to have the Mitten Building which has character you can't build and a history to boot.
"And to think they almost tore it down," one guest said. "That would have been a shame."

ABOUT REDLANDS
Once part of the Spanish Mission lands, Redlands was incorporated in 1888 following an influx of wealthy easterners and mid westerners.
Early settlers brought their cultures, traditions and treasures, adding to the City’s reputation as a cultural and educational community.
Agriculture prospered with the navel orange and many citrus groves still surround Redlands today.
Redlands was the shared dream of Frank E. Brown, a civil engineer and Yale graduate, and E. G. Judson, a New York stock broker, who met in Southern California in late 1870′s.
Naming their Redlands colony for the color of the adobe soil, the two busily laid out a city, brought water from the mountains to the community, introduced the newly discovered Washington navel orange, and recruited settlers. It wasn’t before long before Redlands proudly proclaimed itself the Navel Orange Capital of the World.
